Following a terminally ill fan’s post, Reddit users are asking those involved with Avengers 4 to provide the dying man an early screening of the film. In April, the narrative that Marvel Studios has been unfolding since 2008’s first Iron Man film finally comes to its conclusion with the fourth Avengers movie, which is now officially titled Avengers: Endgame. The surviving heroes will do their best to resurrect those lost in Thanos’ fateful snap, and set the stage for what’s to come in the MCU’s Phase 4.
Marvel fans all over the world are waiting impatiently for their chance to see Avengers: Endgame, and have been since witnessing the jaw-dropping ending of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War. It was the superhero movie cliffhanger to end all superhero movie cliffhangers, and no Marvel fan would dream of missing its resolution. Unfortunately, one particular fan might not have a choice in the matter, due to suffering from an illness that makes it likely he might not live long enough to see Avengers 4.
Yesterday, a fan using the handle Alexander Q posted to the Marvel Studios subreddit, sharing both a heartbreaking story and a simple request. Alexander is a 33-year-old man suffering from a rare genetic disease that he says claimed the life of his sister just three years ago. He currently has liver cancer, mouth cancer, and bone marrow failure, and is afraid he might not be around to take in a screening of Avengers: Endgame when it releases to theaters. Understandably, he’d like to be provided an opportunity to see the film before he passes on. It didn’t take long for his fellow Redditors to take matters into their own hands, starting the social media hashtag #Avengers4Alexander, and attempting to bring Alexander’s plight to the attention of those in a position to make an early screening happen.
Alexander’s story is certainly a sad one, and it’s impossible to read about his situation and not feel for him. Not being able to see the end to a story they’ve been following for a decade isn’t something most people have to worry about, much less a fan this young. Sadly, life isn’t fair, and sometimes people end up dying far before their time. It’s heartening to see Alexander’s fellow fans rallying around him so fast, and doing their best to make an early Avengers: Endgame screening happen.
In the most recent update to his original post, Alexander reveals that he’s been told people at Marvel are aware of his situation now, and are planning to help him out. He also says he he found out he knows a guy who knows a guy who knows Chris Hemsworth, and that the Thor actor was contacted on his behalf. Most of all, Alexander seems moved by the outpouring of love he’s received. Here’s hoping he’s heard right, and Marvel Studios and/or Disney is indeed readying a chance for Alexander to see Avengers 4 before it’s too late.
