The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame is finally here, and it sports a fittingly emotional and epic soundtrack. Fans of the MCU waited a very long time to get their first look at the upcoming film, becoming increasingly desperate for any details they could find. Even by their secretive standards, Marvel Studios played things extremely close to the chest, going so far as to withhold the official title until recently. But at long last, viewers were treated to a cornucopia of Avengers goodies, as the first preview was unveiled, the title was revealed, and the release date moved up to April 2019.
It was a very exciting day to be a Marvel fan, with plenty to dissect and speculate about. Since the trailer was definitely of the teaser variety, it only offered a glimpse, but viewers will be pouring over the footage in their attempt to formulate the latest wave of theories. Admittedly, the music of the trailer may not be at the forefront of anyone’s mind right now, though it’s one of the highlights of the preview and deserves some recognition.
Much like the newly-released Captain Marvel trailer, the Avengers: Endgame preview is set to an instrumental track that sets the mood for the film. The song is called “So Say We All” by Audiomachine, from their 2018 album Volturnus. Audiomachine is a company that primarily makes music for movie trailers and other advertisements. Their work was used previously in the Infinity War trailer.
It’s become a common trend for darker Hollywood blockbusters to incorporate moody covers of pop songs into their trailers. For instance, the Dark Phoenix trailer is set to a rendition of “The End” (originally by the Doors). Marvel Studios hasn’t shied away from this trope in the past, as L’Orchestra Cinématique’s cover of “I’ve Got No Strings” was used in the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer. While Marvel certainly could have gone in this direction for Endgame, they felt it was better to carry over the marketing strategy from Infinity War and use a classical score. It’ll be interesting to see if they go a different route for the later trailers or just stick to this formula.
“So Say We All” plays as an inspired choice for the first Endgame preview. It immediately sets the stage for the concluding chapter in the MCU’s current 22-film arc, emphasizing the desperation and despair of the situation. Earth’s Mightiest have never been in a scenario such as this, and really need to pull together if they are to save the world one final time and (presumably) undo the devastating effects of what’s officially known as The Decimation. This is just the beginning of the advertising campaign, so fans should expect to learn more in the coming months.
