Avengers: Endgame’s re-release hits theaters this weekend, but is it worth checking out? Marvel Studios’ twenty-second entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was arguably the most anticipated movie of the year - and maybe in quite some time - and it thankfully did not disappoint. Avengers: Endgame was a hit with critics and fans alike, and it was positioned for success right from the get-go. It opened to a record-setting $357 million domestically and earned over $1.2 billion in its first weekend alone.

Since the initial three day opening, Avengers: Endgame has continued to perform incredibly well at the box office. It currently is the second highest grossing movie of all-time, and the conversation surrounding it has barely dipped. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo continue to reveal new pieces of information about the film and the process of making it, and fans continue to support it. One fan, in particular, has seen it over 100 times in theaters. Even with this kind of attention and repeat viewings, Marvel Studios is expanding Avengers: Endgame’s theatrical run and the content that it holds.

Starting this weekend, Avengers: Endgame will have brand new material for viewers to see in theaters. The film will now open with a short introductory video from Anthony Russo, but the rest of the added content will come after the movie. As Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Screen Rant last week, “After the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises.” The announcement got plenty of fans excited to check out the added material, but is it really worth another trip to the theater?  The short answer is: not really.

The best reason to check out Avengers: Endgame again this weekend has nothing to do with the re-release material. Instead, the most that will come out of it is just getting a refresher on the events ahead of Spider-Man: Far From Home. If you were already planning on seeing Avengers: Endgame again, then that is the reason to see the movie this weekend, not because of what the added material will be. Considering the ramifications that Avengers: Endgame has for the next movie in the MCU, it could be important to remember as many details about the movie and what they mean for Peter Parker as possible.

It has been revealed that the deleted scene is unfinished, so no matter what the scene is, it will still leave you wanting to see the better version of it. Meanwhile, the “surprise” is the first few minutes of Spider-Man: Far From Home, which some fans may or may not want to see at this point. The Tom Holland-led sequel hits theaters on July 2nd, and many may rather wait to see the footage as part of the entire movie.

That all said, there is also the ongoing attempt by Marvel Studios and MCU fans to try and make Avengers: Endgame the biggest movie ever by passing Avatar. This re-release is widely viewed as a not-so-subtle final push by Marvel and Disney to try and claim this title; Avengers: Endgame is less than $38M away from topping it. While that may seem like a small number for a film that has made $2.75B worldwide, it is quite significant considering the recent performances by the movie. Fans are more than welcome to use this re-release and the new material as an added incentive to get Avengers: Endgame over the Avatar hump, but it may still not be enough.

So where does this leave you? To summarize, Avengers: Endgame is worth checking out this weekend if you planned on doing so anyways ahead of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Otherwise, have reasonable expectations at what to expect after the credits and on its chances to unseat Avatar.
