The big event films that will essentially serve as the climax to MCU Phase 3, Avengers: Infinity War Parts I and II carry with them arguably the biggest hype and fan expectations since the first Avengers movie hit theaters back in 2012. Every major MCU character is set to play a part in the festivities, including the oft-teased galactic villain Thanos. It’s a pair of films sure to change the MCU forever, and projects like that deserve an equally legendary composer on-board to create a score for the ages. Thankfully, two-time Oscar nominee Alan Silvestri has stepped up to the task, signing on to compose the music for the epic duology.
Silvestri previously ventured into the Marvel Studios world in 2011 and 2012, creating the scores for both Captain America: The First Avenger and the original Avengers film. Despite his absence as a credited composer in subsequent MCU installments, some of Silvestri’s cues were reused by Danny Elfman when the latter took over music duties for Avengers: Age of Ultron. With the massive scale of Infinity War, it makes perfect sense that Marvel would opt to bring back the man who provided such compelling aural compositions for the studio’s original superhero team-up extravaganza.
The news of Silvestri’s return to the MCU comes courtesy of his official website, which confirmed that he has signed on as composer for both chapters of Avengers: Infinity War.
A frequent collaborator of director Robert Zemeckis, Silvestri is easily one of the most respected living composers in Hollywood, creating the iconic themes for such classics as the Back to the Future trilogy, Predator, The Abyss, and Forrest Gump. To be fair, he’s also done the music for notorious flops like Super Mario Bros. and Judge Dredd, but one would be hard pressed to fault Silvestri’s work within them. In addition to feature films, Silvestri has contributed to TV, winning an Emmy for the main title theme to FOX’s 2014 update of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, as well as scoring some of the best episodes of popular 90s horror anthology series Tales from the Crypt.
Considering Marvel’s track record of hits since the launch of the MCU, it’s hard to imagine Avengers: Infinity War Parts I and II not ending Phase 3 with another huge success for the studio. Still, even if something somehow goes horribly wrong in the creative process between now and 2019, at least film score devotees are likely to receive another Alan Silvestri score worthy of adding to their collections.
