Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Avengers: Infinity War
-
Tom Holland spoils the ending of Avengers: Infinity War for a packed theater during a surprise visit. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with a script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Avengers 3 is billed as the beginning of the end of everything that has transpired in the MCU over the last decade. On top of the much-awaited first encounter of certain characters populating the franchise, the movie also serves as the Mad Titan Thanos’ story as he starts to actively seek out all six Infinity Stones.
With the film having been in theaters for one week now - not to mention Infinity War’s impressive box office numbers - it’s safe to say that almost everyone has seen the movie by now. Marvel Studios went to great lengths to make sure the film’s plot details were kept under wraps before its theatrical debut, from giving out incomplete and fake scripts to asking the general viewing public to not spoil the film for others. Little did they know, however, that the biggest threat to the Infinity War’s secrecy was their own actors, particularly Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland.
Coming from Claire on Twitter is a raw video of the Russo Brothers, Kevin Feige, Tom Holland, and Benedict Cumberbatch surprising a packed theater in Los Angeles just before Infinity War started playing. After the Marvel execs said their respective pieces, Holland was called on stage, when the first words out of his mouth were: “I’m alive,” which only prompted louder cheers from the crowd.
But, looking back at it now, his simple quip reveals too much about the film considering that Spider-Man/Peter Parker’s death scene was arguably the most emotional one in the movie. Check it out below:
It’s important to note that the event took place earlier this week. Although the exact date isn’t confirmed, it’s safe to say that there are few people from the audience who hadn’t seen the movie yet. And considering the catastrophic nature of Infinity War, deaths have always been expected in it. It’s curious how the Russos and Feige reacted backstage after Holland’s unguarded moment, but it must’ve been a bummer especially for Cumberbatch who has been on guardian duties for the younger actor during blockbuster’s press tour.
Having said all that, in Holland’s defense, some people can take it a different way, especially those who don’t have an inkling about what goes down in the film. It’s easy to pinpoint that something is a spoiler now that many people have already seen the movie, but it would arguably more difficult to read into something like in this case for those who haven’t watched it yet. The actor’s quip could either be viewed as a greeting or a fun jab at the movie that the audience members were about to see.
