In light of Joker’s success, The Batman is imagined as an R-rated movie in new fan-art. In a couple of years, a brand new iteration of the Caped Crusader is set to grace the big screen with Matt Reeves’ upcoming standalone movie. Starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, the actor replaces Ben Affleck who played the iconic superhero in the DC Universe for two films - Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. But after years of endless speculation, he finally stepped away from the role paving the way for a recasting.
Plot details for The Batman are still scant at the moment. But with principal photography set to begin in a short while, chances are that fans will be privy to new details like the official cast list for the project. In the meantime, fans have their own theories as to what the movie will be about considering the younger version of the character. But on the heels of the release of Todd Phillips’ Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix, many are starting to contemplate on the idea of The Batman being rated R.
One of which is digital artist mizuri, who posed the same idea to his followers by creating a mock-up poster for The Batman reminiscent of Joker’s poster style. The artwork features a close-up shot of Pattinson suited up as the Caped Crusader in a simple dark background. Comments on the fan-art regarding the idea of an R-rated The Batman film are split. There are those who support it, sighting how the character better fits in a darker more gruesome narrative than being watered down to appeal to the general viewing public. Other, meanwhile are on the opposite end of the conversation, reasoning that while there are great gritty Batman stories out there, it would be nice to be able to bring little kids to watch The Batman and make it as their introductory point for the superhero. Both sides of the conversation have great points, but for now, chances are that Warner Bros. will be sticking to a more palatable film for the character.
As for those still hoping that Phoenix’s Joker and Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne will meet up, Phillips squashed that possibility in a recent interview. However, that may not be the case moving forward. If Warner Bros. and creatives decide to have the two characters crossover, the fact that they both exist outside of the established DCEU, makes it easier to pull something off. But of course this will largely hinge on the public’s reception of The Batman and how Reeves crafts this fresh story for a brand new iteration of the character.
