In terms of the many reboots and revivals that have been popping up throughout the entertainment industry over the past few years, one of the most interesting and unexpected is this year’s planned Baywatch reboot. Ditching the melodramatic tone of the original series for a raunchy, comedic version, it already looks wildly different than anything fans might have initially expected. There are more than a few meta, self-referential jokes and homages to the original Baywatch series planted there for both casual and diehard fans to notice.
Coming from director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), the film looks more in line with a majority of the other modern comedies that have been released as of late – though that’s not necessarily surprising considering Gordon’s previous work – but with the same amount of abs and attractive people in bathing suits to still be able to call itself a Baywatch film.
A brand new set of character posters for the film was released online today, featuring a number of main characters standing in their beach gear against a frozen tundra backdrop, promising fans that summer is, indeed, coming. Take a look for yourself below:

Now, one of the most appealing aspects of the Baywatch reboot is, without a doubt, its all-star cast. Starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron in the leading roles, the rest of the cast includes a wide array of talented actors in their own right, including Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Kelly Rohrbach, Hannibal Buress, Rob Huebel, and more. The fact that they all look good in the traditional Baywatch bathing suits just makes the ensemble that much better, it seems.
But despite the amount of star power and charisma packed into that roster, the filmmakers and studio are still taking a notable risk with this reboot. The film’s trailer was met with moderately positive welcome from both critics and fans alike, and while most of the teaser’s jokes and gags landed, not all fans may prove to be as receptive to the stark change in tone and story as others. There have been more than a few reboots to come along recently that have tried to up the comedy from their original property as well, so hopefully, Baywatch will fall more line with something like the 21 and 22 Jump Street films, rather than say, the critically panned Vacation reboot from 2015, as The Rock and co. hope to bring Baywatch to an entirely new generation of fans.
